Welcome to the Texas Appaloosa Horse Club home page!

Organized in 1954, the Texas Appaloosa Horse Club is one of the country's first four regional affiliates of the Appaloosa Horse Club. The TAHC's purpose is to promote the Appaloosa horse at the state level.

The TAHC has been a pioneer in many areas. It had a point system, an approved judges list, and drug testing in effect several years before the National or most regional clubs began such efforts. The TAHC has long been a leader in the promotion of the Appaloosa horse and will strive to continue this tradition in the future.

All ApHC Clubs are invited and encouraged to co-point these shows and to come join the fun. The Celebration, known for great horses and great fun, always has lots of prizes, games and giveaways throughout the week.

The Reichert Celebration features several shows during the week: ApHC, APHA, AQHA, POA and a full NSBA Futurity Show. The Celebration Premiere Signature Classes heat up the evenings, providing entertainment for spectators as well, including the Equine Chronicle Two Year Old Color Classic Western Pleasure for color breed horses and riders on Friday night, August 13.

Returning to the Celebration this year is the All Breed Youth Team Tournament, sponsored by Cinch and Cruel Girl, open to all youth competing on any breed of horse. 2009 was the first year for this event and it was a huge success! 2010 ApHC Membership Information
Per ApHC rules, everyone, both owner and exhibitor must show proof of 2010 ApHC membership to show at an ApHC pointed show. We understand many of our members and exhibitors will not have received their cards before the Winternational Show. Please go to the following website and print out your membership verification and bring it to the show with you. Also, the ApHC is not sending out Novice stickers as of 2010. The Novice eligibility information is also available on this webpage. Anyone wishing to show in a Novice class will need to furnish the show office with this information.

Unfortunately due to the ApHC rules, anyone unable to furnish proof of 2010 membership will have to purchase one at the show.
This is an ApHC rule, not a Texas ApHC rule.

Texas Equine Incentive Program Meeting
Jim Corrigan

I went to the meeting as planned yesterday. I don’t have my notes with me, but here’s a short recap of what I can recall.

Lonnie Ledbetter and a lady from the Dallas area whose name, I’m embarrassed to admit escapes me right now, also flew down for the meeting, and a lady (I think it was Merida, but I’m not sure) from the ApHC office attended by phone. Rep. Sid Miller, who sponsored the legislation, HB 1881, was also in attendance, as were reps from AQHA, APHA, ATB and a couple north Texas quarter horse ranchers.

As envisioned by Representative Miller, this will be a Texas-bred, Texas-born program, with points being earned at accredited events in Texas eligible for payback from the program. AQHA, ApHC and APHA stallions that breed six or more mares are automatically in the program by submission of their stallion report, unless they elect to opt-out of the program 30 days before their stallion report is due to the breed association. Stallions who breed less than six mares may opt-in by payment of the required fees, set in the legislation at $30 per mare bred, whether the stallion bred more or less than six mares.

Rep. Miller’s intent was that the program would be an all-or-none deal for the stallion - pay for each mare bred, or don’t pay for any. I entered into the discussion that I thought that more participants could be induced to join the program if stallion owners were able to exclude from payment those mares whose foals would have no chance of participating in the Texas Equine Incentive Program, i.e., those mares for whom semen was shipped out-of-state. I think that suggestion was well-received by all. The Texas Department of Agriculture will be responsible for establishing the rules and administering the program, with the law to come into effect on September 1st. Payouts under the program won’t happen for a couple years at best.

There will be follow-on meetings to get the rules written and published. There are still many questions and areas to be fleshed out, many related to documentation and how information will be exchanged. There was no discussion regarding nominating foals, for instance. If a review of the meager notes I took at the meeting have any other nuggets, I’ll try to pass them along. I think I may be a captive audience for these folks who will be writing the rules and procedures involved in the administration of this program, working in such close proximity to them as I do. You can review or download Rep. Miller’s bill. It’s not very long.

If you have any ideas you would like me to pass along, you can send them to me at my other e-mail address: jimaloosa@cs.com. Thanks.
